Tips
for Preparing for the HB Test:
- Be
sure to read over the HB Standard and the HB Test Sheet before you begin to
study.
- Look
over the list of “Recommended” and “Enrichment” study materials list on the
last page of the HB Standard. Many of these books can be borrowed from pony
clubbers or local libraries.
-
Go to www.ponyclub.org; at
the top of the page click on “Instruction/HM”; click on “Articles” and
scroll down. You will find lots of helpful study materials, tests, flash
cards, and quizzes developed other clubs and members.
- Get
together with other testing candidates to study and practice discussing
conformation, anatomy, teeth, etc. on each others horses.
- Have a
knowledgeable person look over your record book.
-
Prepare your lesson plans (mounted and unmounted) well in advance.
-
Prepare a conditioning schedule and be sure you can discuss it thoroughly
and knowledgeably.
- Have
someone quiz you on parasites, immunizations, diseases, etc.
- Teach
a minimum of 6 hours for your local pony club and have your DC write a
letter stating your participation in at least 6 hours of mounted lesson
teaching (w/assistance). Bring letter from DC to the rating!
-
Remember this is a hands-on type test of increasing knowledge and competence
in the care handling of horses. You will be working with horses you do not
know. Find as many unfamiliar horses as you can and Practice! Practice!
Practice!
